City Changes Name to Promote TV Series
There have been a lot of whacky and ambitious things done in the name of advertising. We’ve seen people, stores, and entire films agree to adopt products, slogans, and new names in advertising stunts. But the hit TV series Game of Thrones is thinking bigger: for the release of their third season on DVD, they’re changing the name of a city.
While on a train, a producer of the show’s ears perked up at the name of one of the stops on the route: Kings Langley. After talking with city officials, the town agreed to change their name (temporarily) to Kings Landing, the fictional capitol of the kingdom in the show.
City officials hope that local businesses will get in on the fun, encouraging a boost in tourism. Starting February 17th, the city’s signs will read “Kings Landing.” HBO is covering the costs of the mutually beneficial operation. The 3rd season of Game of Thrones will release on February 18th.
