Super Bowl Sequel to Interracial Cheerios Ad Responds to Controversy

A while back, Cheerios released a commercial that happened to feature an interracial family. The company was forced to shut down the comment section on their YouTube page due to the unprecedented backlash they received. Overall though, the public reacted overwhelmingly in favor of the company, strongly reprimanding the offensive responses and making the spot a victory for Cheerios as a brand.

This year, in the spotlight of the biggest advertising showcase of the year, the Super Bowl, Cheerios is putting forth a sequel. How do they respond to those that reacted with ignorance and hate? The commercial begins with the father explaining that their family has a mommy and a daddy – pushing together two cheerios – and the audience holds its breath. Is Cheerios explaining prejudice to us the way they would to a child?

Nope. The father reveals that the family is expecting another baby! It’s an emotional and beautiful  family moment, complete with the adorable little girl using Cheerios to negotiate for a puppy. Kudos to the cereal manufacturer who instead of feeding on controversy, simply chose to feed on Cheerios.
