Newcastle Ale Makes Hilarious Non Superbowl Spot
Newcastle Brown Ale never had any intention of running a Super Bowl ad. But if they did, they wanted it to be the biggest, over-the-top, star studded extravaganza possible. So instead, they created ifwemadeit.com, a site dedicated to the premise that Newcastle would not run a Super Bowl spot, but if they did, it would be, well, something worth talking about. In fact the non-effort itself is every bit as water cooler – worthy as the best ads we’ve seen so far for the big game.
The centerpiece is a wonderful diatribe by actress Anna Kendrick who is frankly a little pissed that Newcastle asked her to be in a Super Bowl commercial then rescinded the offer. “Turns out they don’t even have the money or permission to make a [bleeeep] commercial. They don’t even have the right to say [bleeeep],” laments the star of such films as Up In The Air and Pitch Perfect.
The site also includes a video that may only be truly appreciated by ad industry professionals. The piece documents a real focus group that Newcastle conducted to get consumer sentiment on some “out there” ideas they would consider producing, if they were actually going to produce a Super Bowl commercial. The beauty is that no matter how ridiculous the ideas, you can always count on a consumer to tell you that there is some merit to the work and they would expect it might “raise Newcastle sales by as much as twenty percent.”
While false pretense seems to have become a marketing tactic surrounding the the ad industry’s biggest event of the year, this one is well executed and dang it, just made us laugh.
