Gripping Super Bowl Spot Highlights Deaf Player
This season, the Seattle Seahawks drafted the first deaf offensive player in NFL history. Derrick Coleman was not drafted last season, despite a career at UCLA that got a lot of people’s attention. His perseverance paid off, and Duracell is sharing his story in a new ad with the tagline “Trust Your Inner Power.”
The ad depicts Coleman growing up deaf, and features a voiceover of the story in Coleman’s own words. It has all the chills and inspiration that a Hollywood sports pic might convey in the span of 60 seconds. Duracell lets Coleman’s story take center stage, but now Duracell batteries will be on the field too, helping Coleman hear the roar of the crowds.
One of the understated but groundbreaking aspects of this spot is the fact that it’s captioned. There is a big movement going on to get movie theaters to have captioned options, and in the deaf community this spot will likely to fuel that fire.
